TsavoWest National Park
Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic and diverse wildlife parks, covering about 9,065 square kilometers. It lies to the west of Tsavo East, separated by the Nairobi–Mombasa highway and railway line. Known as the “Land of Lava, Springs, and Man-Eaters,” Tsavo West offers a breathtaking mix of landscapes, from rugged mountains and volcanic cones to lush springs and open savannahs.
Highlights & Attractions
- Mzima Springs – A crystal-clear oasis where underground streams from Mount Kilimanjaro emerge, home to hippos, crocodiles, and colorful fish.
- Big Five Wildlife – Tsavo West hosts elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos, along with cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, and many antelope species.
- Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary – A protected area within the park dedicated to the conservation of the endangered black rhino.
- Shetani Lava Flow – A vast expanse of black, hardened lava that gives insight into the park’s volcanic past and offers dramatic photo opportunities.
- Chaimu Crater & Roaring Rocks – Scenic viewpoints ideal for panoramic views and birdwatching.
- Scenic Landscapes – The park’s terrain is dotted with acacia woodlands, rocky ridges, and verdant valleys, making it a photographer’s paradise.

June to October and January to February are the best months for game viewing, when the weather is dry and roads are easily passable.

From Mombasa: Around 4–5 hours by road via Mtito Andei Gate.
From Nairobi: About 5 hours by road or via airstrips such as Kilaguni and Tsavo Gate.
